City of Las Cruces Solid Waste Transfer Station
The City of Las Cruces Solid Waste Transfer Station is one high tech trash facility! The solid waste transfer station carries on all types of recycling as well as other forms of solid waste management.
One way that LE Electric helped to achieve the management goals of this facility was in connection with the compactor. This compactor is completely automated, controlled by various Programmable Logic Controllers and Variable Frequency Drives.
The control cabinets associated with the compactor are there in order to provide manual override to the automated system. The discharge of the compacted cube is controlled manually from the front of the machine. The door, piston, and locking latches are all controlled by the small control cabinet with the joystick on the front.
The height of the ceilings (over 4 stories from the floor at the compactor) and the varying floor levels add to the degree of difficulty in wiring this building. The lighting was a big consideration because of the various heights from floor to ceiling the light levels in some places had to be adjusted in order to provide adequate light at the floor.
Because of the size of the facility and extreme distances from the service entrance at the southwest corner there are quite a few sub-panels in this facility. At each sub-panel location there is a 480V panel as well as a 240V panel that is supplied through a step down transformer. This was done in this case in an effort to lessen voltage drop on the long feeders that cross this vast building (many of the feeders are hundreds of feet long).
The efficiency in management of the solid waste in the Las Cruces area is a testament to the management of this facility and to what can be accomplished with minimal labor and maximum technology!
